Has anyone here every rebuilt the valves on thier backhoe? I just got mine and while sitting in the garage it is making quite a mess on the floor. I started looking an notice clean oil dripping from the botttom of one of the valves. I pulled on the handle and could here a gurgle, every time the plunger moves it gurgles, so it must be quite a leak. Is it as simple as a couple of o-rings or is it pretty intense. It's an ARPS 70 1993 or 1994 model. It needs some work but for $2200 I couldn't pass it up. Roger have you had to rebuild yours??Jeff

Have not yet but I just ordered o-rings for my 47 JD backhoe because it's been doing much like yours. I also ordered cylinder repair kits for the stabilizer arm for hoe and one for 430 loader bucket curl cylinder. Just small leaks but tired of the fluid on the garage floor. Never changed any of these before so I hope someone who has experience can add something to board to help us out. ....

I have just rebuilt my JD 7 backhoe control valves. It was fairly straight forward but there are a lot of pieces inside and it is difficult to know exactly what you need until you get it all apart and cleaned up. I found it particularly useful to have bought the parts and technical manuals prior to disassembly. I was able to understand the theory of operation and what each part is for. Full set of o-rings, as well as a new main relief valve poppet ended up costing me approx $250. For all of you out there that need new hoses and don't have a local guy, I found a website that will make them up to order. They came in record time and at a fraction of the cost of original equipment parts. Only thing is that I have not yet pressurized them which, I suppose, is the ultimate test. I will let everyone know how they hold up once attached.
Right now, I am scraping rust and painting the cylinders and parts of the frame.

Well it looks like I'm going to HAVE to something to my hoe valves. The guy had the inlet and outlets reversed. It was not a pretty picture. The hoe tensed up whenever I tried to move the valves etc...Had me bumfuzzled....then it really got nasty....I noticed the hoses looking rather swelled and then I heard the POP and fluid went everywhere. It looks like the fluid is coming from between the valves(lots of it). Are there just O-Rings between the valves?? Can I just replace those with a normal O-Ring?? BTW I reversed the hook-ups and it works fine(well lubricated but working)

There are o-rings between the valve sections. I'm not sure what you mean by a normal o-ring. Depending on the application they are made of different materials, they are different inside diameters and they are different thicknesses. My advice is to go and get replacement parts. Taking this apart and cleaning it all up is a reasonably big job. and there is no way to assume that the leak is coming from between the sections. It might be leaking out of the bottom seal and blowing out of the top of the return spring cup making it look like it is coming from between the valves. This is exactly what happened to mine. I would suggest pulling the valves apart and at least replacing the top and bottoms spool seal as well as the backing washers and retainers. On mine, these were cupped to the point where the o-ring just didn't seat in the groove any more. You have it apart, you might as well do it all - you'd really hate getting it all back together and then finding something else leaking. ....

That's a real bad situation. You're sounding in a much better humour than I would be. I don't want to add more trouble, but I'll raise a possibility, and I'm not sure if it applies to hoe valves. There is possibly more damage than just o-rings. In many SCV's, the exhaust, or outlet part of the valve (Galley, I think they're called) are not designed to withstand relief valve pressure. An SCV's casing an be cracked if a control valve further down the line is closed and raises the pressure on the exhaust galley to relief pressure. That's the power beyond issue, and why independent lines to the sump are provided for cylinder return oil flow. It's unpleasant to contemplate, but it might be wise to get a reading on the possibility before proceeding to just install new seals. Good luck with this. I know it's little help after the fact, but I use short plastic ties to identify my pressure lines. If there's any doubt which line gets pressure, one of the pair of lines from the tractor can be grabbed before connecting the hoe and the hydraulics then turned on. The pressure line can be felt to stiffen. ....

Well I tore apart the valves last night, o-rings it is. Then I spent today running around trying to find 40 o-rings the right size. It took 4 places but, I got em. Put them in tonight and finished making the 3pt lock brackets. Went out and dug up the wifes yard at 11pm, Gotta rig up some rear lights on Yanny! Man what a neat toy...uh ...tool!!
